What Electronics Needs To Be Unplugged Before Leaving?

Before leaving a home sometimes it is wise to unplug electronics for safety, for monetary reasons, or for protective reasons.

Items unplugged for safety include anything that has an element that can start a fire or pose a potential hazard when left plugged in without supervision. It is safer and easier on one’s frame of mind to unplug a device rather than wonder when one is a goodly distance from home whether the appliance is indeed off. Clothing irons, curling irons, hair dryers, toasters, space or baseboard heaters, and heaters in general are all good items to unplug.

Devices unplugged for safety include power tools such as drill presses, skill saws, soldering devices, or anything motor driven for carpentry or mechanics. Imagine a random cat or child accidentally triggering the device if it were still plugged in.

Items unplugged for monetary concerns include elements that change temperature. If the item cannot be unplugged easily, one might shut the breaker off for larger appliances. Breakers or fuses can be found in the breaker or fuse box which is located in different areas depending on the the abode. Common areas to store breaker or fuse switches are outside on the side or rear of the house, inside a garage, inside an interior closet, or behind a door in a bedroom or bathroom.

Things which change temperature include air conditioners, furnaces, swamp coolers, heat pumps, water heaters, stoves, dryers, and freezers or refrigerators not in use. Make sure before shutting an item off that the home doesn’t require the item to be left on to maintain the condition of other items such as specific wooden furniture and other items which need special care like swimming pool pump motors.

Items unplugged for protective reasons include sensitive expensive items like computers or other electronic devices.
